Lewis University is set to collaborate with Will County for the eighth annual pumpkin recycling event. The event, facilitated by the Lewis Physics Club, will be known as "Catapult a Pumpkin 2024."
According to a news release from the Village of Romeoville, this initiative offers residents an opportunity to recycle pumpkins and electronics and shred documents. The event is scheduled for Saturday, November 2, from 9 a.m. to noon at Lewis University, located at 1 University Parkway in parking lot "W," south of the main entrance. Participants are encouraged to bring their pumpkins and gourds but should remove any candles and leave bags and boxes at home.
The news release further states that the Lewis Physics Club will operate catapults to launch pumpkins into the air. Additionally, the Farm Bureau and University of Illinois Extension office will provide information on composting. Will County will offer services for document destruction and electronics recycling.
"This is a chance for a decorative natural item to be recycled, as all the pumpkins collected will be taken to a site to be mixed and composted. Eventually, they will become a highly nutritious soil supplement, feeding future crops, gardens - or perhaps a new pumpkin patch," said a village spokesperson in the news release. "Be part of the fun and bring your family or friends to see whose pumpkin flies the highest."
Lewis University already engages in food scrap collection on campus for composting purposes, which has led them to partner with Will County for this event. The drive-thru document destruction service will limit participants to three bank boxes per vehicle. Vehicles can also recycle up to two televisions through the electronics recycling service offered.
