With the official ribbon cutting on October 7, a new trail connection linking the Centennial Trail and the I&M Canal Trail is now accessible to the public. The connection extends along and under the 135th Street bridge, providing a continuous pathway from Lemont to Joliet. The project was funded by a grant from CITGO and executed collaboratively by the Village of Romeoville, City of Lockport, and Forest Preserve District of Will County.
The project introduces various enhancements including walkways, curbs, street graphics, parking facilities, benches, a bike repair station, signage, landscaping, and a mural. Plans for maintenance are in place with future expansions aimed at connecting to the Romeoville Metra station.
Romeoville Mayor John Noak praised the initiative as “a fantastic example of a public-private partnership that has helped us to enhance our community’s trail system.” Lockport Mayor Steven Streit acknowledged the project's significance in improving connectivity between cities and heritage sites.
Forest Preserve Board President Annette Parker highlighted their long-term dedication to community connectivity through trails. Jim Cristman from CITGO expressed enthusiasm about contributing to safer connections between communities.
