The Providence Catholic Girls and Boys Basketball Teams are preparing to host the 2nd Annual Super Celtics Special Needs Co-ed Camp on January 4th and 5th, 2024. This event is designed for area grade school students with special needs, providing them an opportunity to learn about basketball in a fun environment.
Coach Jenna Maziur expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming camp: “We are excited to again offer this opportunity for area grade school students with special needs, and invite these children to have some fun while learning about basketball.” The previous year's event was successful, and organizers aim to expand it this year.
Campers will be paired with either a 2-on-1 group or a high school player buddy. Jenna Maziur, who has seven years of experience as a special education teacher and is a parent of a child with nonverbal Autism, will supervise the camp. Assisting her will be Noah Senffner, a Providence alumnus and current boys basketball coach. He holds a Master of Education focusing on Special Education/Learning Behavior Specialist 1.
Parents are encouraged to attend the camp sessions. Activities will be adapted to meet the campers' needs. Eileen Copenhaver, Head Girls Basketball Coach at Providence Catholic, highlighted the importance of sharing their love for basketball: “Our girls and coaches enjoyed this event so much last year,” she said. “I think it’s important to take the things you love, like basketball, and find a way to share that love of the sport with others.”
Varsity player Seth Cheney also looks forward to participating in the event: “Growing up with a brother with special needs, it means a lot to me to be able to help at this event and make memories with kids who don’t always have an opportunity,” he stated.
Registration is available online at www.providencecatholic.org. The camp fee is $30 per participant and includes a t-shirt. Questions can be directed to Coach Jenna Palmer at jenna.palmer7@gmail.com or Coach Eileen Copenhaver at ecopenhaver@providencecatholic.org.
